R. Kelly‘s lawyer say he can’t read, and that is the reason he lost his civil suit in which one of his alleged sexual abuse victims from 1998 sued him for punitive damages. The lawsuit took place in Cook’s County, and Robert lost by default. The Age Aint Nothing But A Number singer did not appear to court, and his legal team says it’s because he couldn’t read the summons.
His legal team Zaid Abdallah and Raed Shalabi, are now claiming the singer’s “learning disability” prevented him from reading the court documents and taking proper action.
“[Kelly] suffers from a learning disability that adversely affects his ability to read,” legal documents state, “… in essence he cannot.”
A damages hearing for the case has been scheduled for May 8. Kelly’s attorneys are asking that the default judgment be set aside so that they can fight the plaintiff’s claims.
